The caramel-like quality to her velvety voice, affluent in the tradition of expression and nuances, has attracted countless listeners for several decades with numerous songs. And continues to do so.
Her effortless ability to mould herself with the changing moods of melody and technique, exuding oomph, pleasure or pain as required, makes her one, if not the most, versatile voices on the Indian music scene.
A tour de force in the world of singing, September 8 marks Asha Bhosle's 75th birthday.
While it's humanly impossible to select a few gems from her vast oeuvre, I'd like to celebrate the legendary singer by listing my All-time Favourite Top 10 Asha numbers.
Feel free to post in your picks as well.
10. Tanha tanha, Rangeela
For most folk, Urmila Matondkar sprinting on the photogenic beaches of Goa, in nothing more than a skimpy tee-shirt is an alluring sight. But lending soul to our highly sensuous subject is Asha Bhosle's super sexy rendition of Tanha tanha. It's reassuring how A R Rahman finds the most refreshing ways of showcasing the singer's never-ending reserve of talent. Be it in Rangeela, Daud (O bhanwre), Satya (Sapne mein milti hai), Thakshak (Rang de), Lagaan (Radha kaise na jale) or Taal (Kahin aag lage).
