Radio program Mercury Theatre on the Air presented Orson Welles' radio production of HG Wells' War of the Worlds on October 30, 1938.
The programme -- about a fictional Martian invasion of New Jersey -- aired on Halloween. Maybe that's why those listening in panicked.
According to news reports, there were six million listeners, and over 1.7 million believed the invasion was a true story.
