Giving Vinod Kambli a leg up!

She got her break with the television show Yeh Meri Life Hai. Since then, she has appeared on both small screen and large screen, in item numbers and in character roles.

Now, Shama Sikhander is back in her latest avatar as a dancer in Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, which also has cricketers dancing. The show is judged by Sushmita Sen and Wasim Akram. Shama's dancing partner is cricketer Vinod kambli.

Shama talks to Nithya Ramani about the show, the recent controversy with Harbajan Singh and shuffling between television and films. Excerpts:

Where are you from and how did you get into the industry?

I am from Rajasthan. My father is in the marble business. He shifted to Mumbai to expand his business. He had made many contacts in the industry and it was he who motivated me to get into acting.

Did you want to get into acting?

I was always eager to do something different. I used to take part in school drama and stage shows and always received praises. So, I guess, in the back of my mind I wanted to be an actor. And since the decision was my father's, I was sure I would do well. He has always taken the right decisions for me. With the contacts he had in the industry, I got Yeh Meri Life Hai as my big break.

Why do you keep shuffling between television and films?

I don't find anything wrong with shifting between television and films. I am someone who gets bored with things very fast. I related myself with Pooja. I didn't want to do films then. Later, I got bored with Yeh Meri and didn't enjoy doing it.

It wasn't what I wanted to do and I felt like my expressions were getting too monotonous. There was nothing new and I couldn't change the character either. Films give me the opportunity to do different things and grow as an actor.
