This day in entertainment history

On October 6, 1946, Vinod Khanna was born. Square-jawed, big boned, with eyes that made women go weak whenever he showed up on screen, he was one of the biggest stars of the 1970s and 1980s. If you don't believe us, your parents will back our claim.

Interestingly, 22-year old Khanna made his big screen debut as a villain, in Sunil Dutt's Man ka Meet. Mere Apne in 1971 gave him his big break, leading to a number of lead roles. By the mid-70s, the hits had begun to arrive like clockwork -- Parvarish, Khoon Pasina, Amar Akbar Anthony and Qurbani, to name a few.

A little over a decade later, Khanna surprised a fair number of people by turning to politics. By then, however, his sons Akshaye and Rahul had pretty much taken to cinema, as if to ensure the family connection with Bollywood stayed strong.

Today, the veteran is back on television, in a serial by Smriti Irani no less. Maybe it's safe to expect a return to the big screen too?

Also on October 6, in 1989, the legendary Bette Davis died of cancer. She was 81. Frequently playing roles that might be considered unflattering by most, she eventually earned her place among Hollywood's most recognizable faces, thanks to roles in films like Jezebel, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and All About Eve.
