One Missed Call
To be fair, director Takashi Miike is a helluva visionary and films like Ichi The Killer and Full Metal Yakuza graphically prove that. He loves to push sensibilities out the window in his provocative urge to shock and repulse. And while there is much to marvel at, his 2004 film One Missed Call is definitely not among his better works.
The concept starts off brilliantly, with a phone-spook and people seeing the familiar 'one missed call' message dying in the most brutal of ways, but then it becomes a mess of twisted logic, incest and cliche. Apparently, the American version, directed by Eric Valette, confirmed that the sick plotline of the original did not work well at all with US audiences, the film bombing badly.
Will you like it any better? Wait till Friday.
