The Japanese Horror brigade

With the release of the English version of One Missed Call hitting Indian theatres this Friday, we decided to look at the recent phenomenon of Japanese horror films being consistently remade by Hollywood. Here are the most notable examples:

The Ring

Things really kicked off in 1998 with the Japanese original, Ringu. The story of one videotape that, when viewed, would lead to the viewer's death in seven days became a rage in Asia. The concept was basic enough to appeal to viewers across the world, and so Pirates Of The Caribbean director Gore Verbinski adapted this in 2002 as The Ring. The film was hugely successful.

The Japanese Ringu director Hideo Nakata himself came aboard to helm the English adaptation of the sequel, The Ring Two. In terms of horror cinema in recent years, few can boast of the global impact of The Ring series.
