Rich girl Waheeda Rehman marries poor boy Dharmendra against her parents' wishes. Things come to a head during Holi when Dharmendra throws colour on Waheeda, who is wearing an expensive silk sari gifted by her parents. Worried about their reaction, she insults Dharmendra in public. The couple part ways.

Dharmendra spends his life trying to earn enough money to buy her a silk sari. Waheeda, who immediately regrets her impulsive act, spends her life awaiting his return.

They have a poignant reunion many years later, when Dharmendra returns with an expensive silk that he drapes on Waheeda before covering her with the colours of Holi.
