Amit Malhotra (Amitabh Bachchan) is in love with Chandini (Rekha). But when his brother Shekar (Shashi Kapoor) dies unexpectedly, he marries Shobha (Jaya Bachchan), his brother's pregnant fiancee, out of a sense of duty.

Life goes back to normal, until Amit's path crosses Chandini's once again. Chandini is now married to Dr V K Anand (Sanjeev Kapoor), but their dormant love for each other flares to life. They reveal their feelings for each other one fine Holi morning.
