On July 23, 1926, Fox Film Corporation purchased patents for a sound system that could record sound onto film, for the princely sum of $60,000. The system was renamed Movietone.
Why is this important? Because it marks the debut of the talking movie, of course. Two years after the buy-out, Fox had begun using the system to make feature films and, more importantly, create newsreels of important world events of the time.
Without Movietone, many events that shaped our history would never have been captured on camera. Without it, we would have lost valuable visuals of what our world looked like in that time before the Internet and the iPhone.
Imagine watching The Dark Knight Returns without sound, and just the crunch of popcorn-eaters from seats next to yours. Now you know why this is important enough to be remembered decades on.
