James Mangold's intriguing cop drama may have ended up somewhat overreaching, but Stallone did very well as protagonist Freddy Heflin, a Sheriff with a hearing disability. Heflin looks up to cops -- his ears got in the way of him becoming one -- but in his dealings with the NYPD, Heflin learns that his heroes might be seriously flawed. A neat, nuanced performance.
