On December 2, 1867, English author Charles Dickens gave his first public reading in the United States.
According to reports, the line for the reading stood at over a mile long, outside a theatre in New York City. It was an interesting precursor to what is now a mandatory marketing and publicity tool for most big authors. Today, the bigger the writer, the bigger the reading. Dickens was clearly on to something.
Also on December 2, in 1932, entertainers Bing Crosby and Bob Hope appeared on stage together for the first time, at the Paramount Theatre.
Thanks to their comic skills, they went on to become one of the most successful acts in Hollywood. Most of you may be unfamiliar with their work, but your parents will certainly remember.
