On December 7, 1925, Johnny Weissmuller set a world record for the 150-yard freestyle swim.
A gold medallist at the 1924 Olympics, he competed again in 1928, taking home five gold medals. Three years later, he was approached by MGM to play the lead role in Tarzan the Ape Man.
For the next decade, he continued to play the tree-climbing star, becoming the on-screen Tarzan most people knew best.
