Die Hard 3 was set on the back of terrorists attacking New York. Today, it would probably be hard to make a film on that subject. What is the notion of making a film about terrorism after 9/11?
I think there was a lot of reluctance. The day after 9/11, a lot of action scripts got thrown out. In Die Hard 4.0 we do talk about cyber terrorism in a post 9/11 world, and the challenge was to tell a story that deals with terrorism in the United States.
For a long time I think all the studios were reluctant to make films about terrorism.
I think it's important for people to evolve; so how important was it for John McClaine, as a character himself to do so?
Well, Fox, Len Wiseman, a couple of different writers who worked on the film and I thought it was a good idea if I played John McClaine at my own age, because going back to 1986, I played him as a young 32 year-old cop. If you look at the arc of all four films, it makes sense to have him be a little older and a little crankier and just out of place in the world.
