The Tamil director with a difference

National Award-winning director Cheran is one of the very few Tamil filmmakers who make movies that are really different and rooted to the soil. Cheran made his mark as a filmmaker with a sensitively told Solla Marantha Kathai. Autograph, narrating the stages in the life of a young man, too was a beautiful story, told thoughfully. Cheran directed the film and acted as the protagonist. But that was because no hero was willing to act in the film.

Autograph won the National Award for the Most Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. When both awards and commercial success reached him, all those actors who rejected the role regretted their decision. Autograph was remade in both Telugu and Kannada.
