After a bad marriage, Zubeidaa (Karisma Kapoor) falls for a certain Maharaja Vijayendra Singh. Despite opposition and religious differences, she marries him but has a hard time adapting to the royal customs and conventions.

Benegal's rich narrative finds ample opportunity to highlight Jaipur's ornate palaces and elite polo clubs.
