Bollywood's best lovers

To celebrate love in the movies, we bring you the Hindi movie industry's 10 most celebrated romantic pairings.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis

Raj Kapoor first saw Nargis when he rang her doorbell. He was there to meet her mother to enquire about the facilities offered by Famous Studios. Nargis, who was busy frying Pakoras, opened the door to the blue-eyed wonder.

On seeing him, she pushed her hair behind with besan (chickpea flour) stained fingers, smearing her face and giving Raj Kapoor a classic celluloid moment.

From Aag (1948) to Andaaz (1949), Barsaat (1949), Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori (1955) to Jagte Raho (1956), they sizzled onscreen.

Knowing Raj Kapoor's obsession with white, Nargis became his lady in white.

Their scene in Shree 420 -- under an umbrella and swaying to the soft and soulful Pyaar hua, ikraar hua -- is love in the movies at its best.

The last film they did together was Jagte Raho. It is ironical that in the movie Nargis is the lady who finally quenches Kapoor's thirst but the scene left Indian audiences thirsting forever for more of the Raj Kapoor-Nargis romance. They were never to set the silver screen afire together again.
