Soulful newcomer John Legend took home three awards of his own, including Best New Artist and Best R&B Album. Accepting his award for Best Male R&B Performance for Ordinary people, he explained that the song came out of a writing session with the Black Eyed Peas: 'I kept it, and I'm glad I kept it.'
Another Legend highlight was collaborating for a tribute to reclusive funk legend Sly Stone, with artists like Maroon 5, Will.i.am (from the Black Eyed Peas), and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry -- who were briefly joined on stage by Sly himself for a few bars of the anthemic I want to take you higher, before a sudden exit.
This was Sly's first major concert since his 1993 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction. And the applause was deafening.
