He did not have to do much preparation for the role as it was well-researched project and Chandan Singh guided him a lot. Jha read a couple of books on Ravan. "Being an actor I had to imagine a certain persona, and his mental churning, the issues that he gave priority. I had to give different shades to the character. As an Indian I have been hearing a lot about Ravan, how cruel and evil he was. But we have texts which say good things about Ravan as well."
During the process of research, Jha discovered the mythological character better. It is said that Ravan lived for 350 years, and "the Ram-Sita story" is something that happened just before his death.
For Jha, knowing the life of the king prior to the event was a revelation. "Ravan was a great reformer, a supporter of social justice, a self made man, a law abiding man, and respectful towards others boundaries." Jha feels certain circumstances led Ravan to kidnap Sita.
