Koshish (1972)
Cast: Sanjeev Kumar, Jaya Bhaduri
Director: Gulzar

Haricharan Mathur (Sanjeev Kumar) and Aarti (Jaya Bhaduri) play a deaf and dumb couple.

Aarti joins sign language classes so that she can communicate with her family. They have a child and after a brief illness, Aarti dies. When their son grows up, he starts courting a girl who is deaf and dumb, just like his parents.

There is a beautiful scene in the movie where Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri are playing with their baby, with a rattle. The baby does not respond to the noise and both get alarmed that their newborn is also deaf and dumb like them.

They rush to a doctor, who tells them that there are no pebbles in the rattle.

That scene portrays so many emotions -- anger, frustration, sadness and helplessness -- that it shakes you deeply.

The film was directed by Gulzar, who Jaya Bhaduri considers her rakhi brother and who was also remarkably close to the great Sanjeev Kumar, who worked with the director in memorable films like Aandhi, Mausam and Parichay. Both actors received the National Award for their performances.
