On this night in 1980, an obsessed fan called Mark David Chapman shot Lennon four times in the back outside his home, The Dakota, in New York. The ex-Beatle died shortly after at St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center.

Much as they have for every year since his death, tributes are being paid worldwide to a path-breaking artiste whose music and philosophy continues to inspire newer generations.
