Leaving the costume behind
Reeve had been regaining sensation in parts of his body gradually over the years, and acted in a 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. He played the Jimmy Stewart role of a man in a wheelchair obsessively convinced that a neighbour has been murdered. The role won him a Screen Actors Guild award.

He also donned the directorial cape, largely for television, for In The Gloaming and the biopic The Brooke Ellison Story. He had left his only-actor boots behind a long time ago, and co-wrote the 1987 film Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, the last of the series.

His acting credits were obviously highlighted by the Superman films, but fans will always remember his brilliant

comedic turn in a 1992 production of Noises Off, as well as his inimitable screen presence in John Carpenter's Village Of The Damned.

A great man, and indeed, a tough act to follow.

"And there will be peace. There will be peace when the people of the world want it so badly that their governments will have no choice but to give it to them. I just wish you could all see the Earth the way that I see it. Because when you really look at it, it's just one world." - Superman, in Superman IV: The Quest For Peace.

Rest in peace, Christopher Reeve.
