The quest for peace
Refusing to bow down to his handicap, Reeve struggled bravely to walk again, becoming a crusading icon for spinal cord research worldwide.

After months of physically and emotionally exhausting therapy, he tirelessly lobbed the US Congress for improved insurance protection against catastrophic injury.

In his autobiography, he later admitted having briefly considered suicide but instead, focused his energies on proving dismissive medical experts wrong.

In 1996, he made an emotional appeal at the Oscars, and received a standing ovation for his efforts.

He, along with wife Dana, opened the US' first centre to help teach the paralysed to be more independent, The Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Centre in 2002.

The Reeve family foundation has also distributed grants to paralysis researchers totaling some $22 million.
