Kathapurushan (1995) His parents are separated; yet Kunjunni is emotionally cared for courtesy his mother, grandmother and sundry other ladies in his immediate environment. The placid household turns turbulent when his uncle, Vasu, returns -- ostensibly, he had gone to England to study; in reality, he had turned heeded the call of Mahatma Gandhi, joined the freedom struggle, then turned Marxist. As events swirl around him, Kunjunni takes to the Communist ideology at a time when its violent version has the state in its grip. A spate of attacks on police stations sparks a crackdown; Kunjunni is swept up in the net. It is a long time before he is acquitted. He returns to the world he has left, only to find it has changed while prison held him in suspended animation. He goes looking for his childhood sweetheart and finds and marries her -- and then comes news of his father, to stir things up.
