India, Asia's 4th most corrupt nation

April 10, 2009

13. United States

Elsewhere in the world too, corruption is not unknown. For example, corruption in the United States is much lower than that of Japan with a score of 2.89. There are few corruption cases involving high officials. Corruption among law enforcement officers has been observed in the US.

The US is a leader in fighting corruption, both domestically and overseas. In 1977, it became the first country to pass a law making bribery of foreign officials a crime.

The United States has the strongest record of any OECD Anti-Bribery Convention signatory, with 103 prosecutions, and severe penalties, states The Heritage Foundation study.
