New Bangalore airport takes off

May 24, 2008
The airport, according to BIAL, will be used by 7.5 million passengers every year, thus making it the third busiest airport in the country. The 4,000-metre long and 60-metre wide runway is big enough to accommodate B-747 aircraft.

BIAL says that the new design also allows a parallel runway and the distance between the two runways would be 1,925 metres.

The adjacent car park can accommodate 2,000 cars and is fully automated. The car parking prices have been fixed at Rs 40 for 2 hours and Rs 20 for every additional hour, cheaper compared to the HAL airport rate of Rs 60 per hour.

The new Bangalore airport has baby care units like diaper changing stations and private nursing rooms.

Parking spaces and seating spaces are marked 'reserved' for disabled and elderly passengers.

The disabled and the elderly can book porter service prior to their arrival at the airport. The walkways have sloping ramps wide enough to accommodate large electric wheelchairs.

All the floors in the terminal building are connected by elevators spacious enough to accommodate wheel chairs. Keeping in mind the convenience of the visually impaired, the elevators have Braille plates alongside the number buttons.

In addition to this, a clinic along with a medical store, has been set up at the airport.

The new airport boasts of 53 check-in counters and 18 self check-in counters.

The fully equipped Common Use Terminal Equipment-enabled counters have been designed based on the airline feedback and is linked to a fully automatic baggage handling system.

There are 18 Common Use Self Service kiosks for check-in, ticketing, baggage tracking and other allied services.

These kiosks are located throughout the airport to avoid congestion.

The international departure section has one of the largest duty free outlets in India. The airport houses a sports bar, coffee shops, designer wear outlets, electronic gadget stores and also the Oberoi lounge in the international departure area.
