Mangalore: The new real estate boom town

March 06, 2008
No matter how rapid the rate of development may be in Mangalore, infrastructure is going to be the city's major concern.

Like Bengaluru, the city has opened its arms to developers and investors without giving a thought to infrastructure planning. Mangalore, which has an area of 132.45 sq km with a road length of 671.68 km, require a major infrastructure overhaul.

According to residents of this city, the roads are narrow and incapable of handling heavy traffic. If something is not done soon, Mangalore would go the Bengaluru way, where traffic jams have become the order of the day.

The authorities, however, claim they have taken these aspects into consideration. They say they have chalked out a blueprint which specifies that the roads in the city be widened. At present, the roads are only 20 ft wide and there is a proposal to extend them by another 10 feet.

The city municipal corporation says it now insists on a road margin for all new constructions and this should solve the problem of congestion to a great extent.
