Mangalore: The new real estate boom town

March 06, 2008
Looking at Mangalore's current development, it seems the city is going to expand into the outskirts. It is expected to grow up to Suratkal and it will not be long before the latter, which is about 40 km from Mangalore, will merge into the city itself, says Mangloreans.

However, unlike Bengaluru, Mangalore might not keep expanding forever. It gets cut off to the west because of its coastline though this has not prevented its spread.

Several townships are coming up on the national highways, especially at Derebail and Kulur. The northern and eastern corridors are growing into major real estate hubs.

Reputed developers like the Rahejas and Purvankara are planning big projects here. While Raheja is setting up a 100-acre township at Kulai, Purvankara is planning a 40-acre townshship near Bondel.

Mall fever too is catching up in Mangalore. A few years ago, there was only a Saibeen Complex in Lal Bagh and a line of shops on Balmatta and Hampankatta areas. People generally used to come in to this part of the city to shop.

However, this scenario too is changing. The City Centre, Excel Mall, and Mischief Mall are coming up in Mangalore, just to name a few. Some malls will soon dot the city's outskirts too.
