Mission 2007: Technology for rural India

Akshaya is an initiative by the Department of Information Technology of the government of Kerala to bridge the digital divide in Kerala.

Once again, the inspiration for such an initiative has been the President of India.

In 2002, Dr Azad launched an idea that transformed the lives of 64 lakh families in Kerala. The idea of Akshaya was to familiarise at least one from every family in Kerala with the basics computers.

As the first step, Aksaya set up information dissemination hubs -- Akshaya e-centres -- all over Kerala.

The plan is to have one centre within 2 km of every household and to create a 100 per cent e-literate state!
