Mission 2007: Technology for rural India

Tara Akshar is a literacy programme developed by TARAhaat with the intention of educating the Hindi speaking people of India. In just four weeks, 73 per cent of illiterate women who enrolled in Tara Akshar have learnt to read and write Hindi.

Victor Lyons, the man who developed the programme, came to India as a social worker, working in the field of mental health, says, "Our success rate is more than 70 per cent."

"Working as an NGO on health education programs, I found that literacy is the major problem in India," he added.

"To make any impact on them, we have to first make them literate. We used two techniques to teach people faster. One is what the advertisers use. Another is the technique of video gaming. This is the fastest learning programme in the world."
