'Dabhol project to get going soon'

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said on Friday that the Enron power project would get going soon, as the renegotiation committee will meet as stipulated by the Godbole committee to negotiate the power purchase agreement -- the bone of contention between the state government and the US energy major.

Participating in a meet-the-press programme at the reporters guild in Madras, Deshmukh, who is campaigning for Congress candidates in Kerala for the May 10 assembly elections, clarified that the central government had informed him on Friday that it would send its nominee on the renegotiation committee in a day or two.

"We have also written to Dabhol to come do the negotiating table," he clarified, adding that the terms of arbitration were to review the power purchase agreement.

"If they can bring down the rate of power, other power deficit states can come forward to purchase power,'' he averred.

The chief minister said that the ideal price would be Rs 2.80 to Rs 3.00 per unit. He also announced that the second phase of the project was nearing completion, with 98 per cent of the work already over.

Claiming that Maharashtra was still leading in industrial development in the country, Deshmukh said: "Tamil Nadu may be attracting large investments, especially in the field of information technology, but the question is how many projects are in the implementation stage."
