DF allies to press for commission of inquiry to probe EnronStrongly opposing setting up of a renegotiation panel to go into the controversial Enron deal, the ruling Democratic Front allies in Maharashtra on Wednesday demanded a commission of inquiry to probe the agreement. "A commission of inquiry will clearly establish fraudulent measures adopted during signing of the agreement thus absolving the state government from paying any liquidation damages to the US energy giant," DF coordination committee convenor, N D Patil, told reporters. Earlier, Patil presided over a DF allies meeting, which was attended by representatives of CPI, CPM, Peasants' and Workers' Party, Samajwadi Party, Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh and RPI-Athavale faction. "The DF coordination committee will meet on May 8 and we will press for our demand for instituting a commission of inquiry to go into the Enron deal," Patil said. Asked as to why he was certain that the agreement with Enron had been signed in a fraudulent manner, Patil quoted the energy review committee report, headed by former bureaucrat Madhav Godbole, which has expressed serious concern over 'numerous infirmities' in the process of approvals granted to Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company. The committee had said the arguments in support of approvals granted, appear 'unconvincing' and prima facie against public interest, he said. Patil also noted that the committee had said "it is troubled with the failure of governance that seems to have characterised almost every step of the decision-making process on matters relating to DPC".
