Govt files caveat in SC on 4th cellular slot

Close on the heels of dismissal of a petition against finalisation of licences for the fourth cellular slot by the Bombay High Court, the Centre has filed a caveat in Supreme Court to prevent the party to the case at Bombay from obtaining any ex-parte orders on the issue.

"Department of Telecommunication has filed a caveat in Supreme Court on Wednesday, apprehending that the party to the case in Bombay might approach the apex court with a Special Leave Petition," official spokesperson told PTI.

Stating that an SLP could delay the process of fourth cellular licences, they said that the caveat would allow DoT a chance to be heard in case of an SLP.

On July 24, Bombay High Court had dismissed on merits a petition, which challenged the Union government's decision to exclude Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd from participating in the bid for the fourth cellular licence.

The petition was filed by Federation of Unions of VSNL Employees and VSNL Officers Union, challenging bidding process for fourth cellular slot started by DoT.
