Govt seeks legal advice on cellular litigationThe government on Thursday held legal parleys to explore the possibility of moving the Supreme Court in the face of various litigation in high courts, which has prompted the Department of Telecom to keep in abeyance its decision to finalise licences for the fourth cellular slot. While the final financial bids for fourth cellular slot were received on Thursday, DOT officials kept silent on the opening up of the bids and awarding of the licences in the wake of stay granted by Bombay high court on Wednesday on a petition by the employees of Videsh Sanchar Nigam against the government's decision to keep the telecom monolith away from the process. DoT officials began licensing consultations with the attorney general to explore seeking a transfer of all the related cases in different courts including the Madras high court at one place for effectively taking legal remedies. When contacted telecom secretary Shyamal Ghosh told PTI, "we are reviewing the position. We are yet to get the full information on the case in Bombay high court. Only after getting all the information we will decide on our future course of action." Earlier during the day the government received the final (third) round of financial bids from various telecom players already in the fray for acquiring licences, but postponed opening of bids till further orders, one of the bidders said on the condition of anonymity.
