Thackeray urges all unions to participate in bandh

Lashing out at the 'anti-labour policies' of the central government and the Maharashtra government, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Tuesday urged all trade unions to whole-heartedly participate in Wednesday's bandh setting aside political differences.

"The anti-worker black laws must be crushed and we must take a pledge not to sit quiet till the government is humbled," he said in an appeal in party mouthpiece Saamna in Bombay.

Coming down heavily on the government's labour policies, he said all trade unions must come together burying their differences.

According to trade union leaders, around 15 million workers from textile, banking, insurance, transport, petroleum ports, civic, power and aviation would be participating in the statewide bandh.

For the first time in the history of trade union movement in the state, Shiv Sena would participate in a bandh called by Left parties and trade unions.

The bandh, which has the support of nine other political parties as well as four major trade unions - the INTUC, TUJAC, BMS and BKS - would demand scrapping 'anti-labour, anti-farmer and anti-people' economic policies and Enron power project in the state.
