Avoid bleach as far as possible

Hair-dye is not what damages your hair -- it's the bleach used beforehand that does. Bleach can even burn your hair if left on too long, causing frizzy, brittle strands that break off very easily.

Brighter colours require more bleach to catch on, especially on dark Indian hair -- if you want to go a punk-ish red, yellow, blue or blonde, your hair needs to be strongly bleached first so the dye catches on. Deeper colours and palettes require more diluted bleach treatment beforehand or none at all.
