'Dancing kept me fit in jail'

October 6, 2008
Which exercises form part of your routine? How did you manage to stay fit in jail?

I have a mixed workout of cardio, strengthening exercises and yoga. If I do cardio one day, the next day I perform my strengthening exercises and the third day I do yoga, which consists of only stretching exercises. I pray a lot too, it gives me peace. It is important to have faith in God and then here is hope in life. Prayers keep you relaxed and that shows on your face. I also give rest to my body and don't over-exert my muscles. There are people who don't give their body time to recover from their workouts and hit the gym too often, which is bad for your health.

When I was in jail, I would do stretching exercises and taught dancing to the girls who were fond of it. I am a Bharatnatyam and Kathak dancer -- they were happy to learn and it was entertainment for us. Classical dancing is the base for any kind of dance. It made things easier for me also, when I had to learn Western steps for films. Dancing kept me fit in jail.

You also need to eat the right kind of food to stay fit -- I think your fitness is 70 percent reliant on your diet and 30 percent reliant on your workout. Some people work out religiously and gorge on everything -- that doesn't help. My fitness mantra is to keep myself fit both mentally and physically and also to maintain a high level of stamina so that I remain flexible.
