The scene is raucous, very much like a rock concert
October 6, 2008
Inside, the scene is raucous, very much like a rock concert, but with some sort of spiritual undertones. It's larger than Prathamesh Dandiya, and even more densely packed. Grandstands, filled to capacity, line both sides of the venue, focused on the mammoth centre platform that houses the garba and dandiya dancers.
On the platform itself, the scents are many and diverse: sweat, perfume, sulphur and freshly-cooked food. The clothes are even more dynamic, from multi-coloured, heavily-ornamented Navratri costumes to the latest trends in Western clothing.
Navratri tunes on your mobile!
"Falguni is Navratri," a young woman named Harshini explains. "Just listen to her, and you'll be transported to some higher place. She’s really the best!"
And when Falguni finally takes the stage, the crowd does truly come alive. She matches their energy, putting 100 percent into the performance. Be it traditional devotee hymns, classic songs or the latest Bollywood hits, Falguni keeps them coming with her trademark voice and on-stage antics. She pours every ounce of emotion into her vocals, digging down deep for low notes and raising up on her tip toes for high ones. She even manages to make 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' bearable, if only for a little while.
