Nadi shodhana pranayama (Energy channel purifier pranayama)

October 1, 2008

Sit in any meditative pose. Place your left hand in chin mudra, with the tip of your index finger touching the tip of your thumb. Place the right hand in nasagra (nosetip) mudra, using the remaining fingers to shut and open the nostrils as instructed.

This is the simple version: shut your right nostril with the right hand thumb. Inhale from the left for four counts. Exhale from the left for four counts. This is one round. Do up to 10 rounds and repeat by shutting the left nostril now, and inhaling from right nostril for four counts. Exhale from the same nostril for four counts. This is one round. Repeat up to 10 rounds for the left nostril also.

Benefits: It has a powerful effect on the major glands like pituitary and hypothalamus, helping manipulate their impact on the rest of the glandular system. This balances both brain hemispheres, bringing inner harmony and removing inner conflicts that can set off psychosomatic disorders in our body. It belongs to the set of cleansing, healing practices with the least contraindications. Also used to relieve tension headaches.
