My favourite is the pro touge mode

June 19, 2008

Game modes

The different game modes in Grid ensure that there's never a dull moment; you will never wish you could skip an event. There's everything from tradition circuit racing, to drift challenges and destruction derbies.

My personal favourite is the pro touge mode. It is a one-on-one race that consists of two runs -- one downhill, the other uphill. The object is to clock a better time than your opponent over the two runs, which is obviously done by beating him. However, you are not allowed to make contact with your opponent and doing so results in a penalty, which gets added to your overall time.

It's not only the variety of modes that sets Grid apart from other racers, but how well each of these modes has been implemented; a lot of thought has been put into each of these race modes and they aren't just there to make up the numbers. Many racing games have tried to bring to gamers the true experience of drifting, but few have managed to do it as effectively as Grid. The game implements drift mechanics and teaches you to drift so well, that you will often find yourself drifting even in non-drift races, as it is often the fastest and most effective way around corners.

At the end of each career mode season is the 24-hour Le Mans race, in which participation is optional. The race lasts only about 12 minutes in the game, complete with day and night transitions. The Le Mans race consists of various car classes, and your objective is to simply finish at the top of your car class. Even on normal difficulty, the Le Mans race is quite hard to complete and this race, along with the destruction derbies, is where you will find yourself using the rewind feature the most.
