Wellington & Coonoor, Tamil Nadu

Take a slow lazy ride on the Nilgiri toy train, explore the beautiful environs of the town, step into Beulah Farms and sample some of their delicious wines. There is a lot in store for you in the adjoining hill towns of Wellington and Coonoor.

Wellington is just a kilometer before you reach Coonoor. The drive from Ooty has several breathtaking viewpoints. The Nilgiris come as a breath of fresh air -- curvy roads, tall scented eucalyptus and serene wooded forests.

If you have your own vehicle, drive towards Kotagiri and enjoy the beautiful views en route. A few kilometres along the way is the Beulah Farm where you will be tempted to buy some homemade wine and preservatives.

Airfare for Rs 599 and less!

The toy train ride is another lovely experience not to be missed. You can board it in Coonoor or Wellington and go right up to Ooty.

It takes more than a couple of hours, travelling at a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour with stops at about five stations on the way. But then you're on a lazy holiday, so what's the hurry? Enjoy the views of the beautiful valley, tea plantations and old heritage cottages as you pass by.

In Coonoor, make sure you visit the charming Taj Garden Retreat, built more than 150 years ago. A graceful, old colonial building, it takes you back to the days of the Raj. The residential cottages are scattered throughout the six acre property amidst lush gardens. Sitting out in the garden, under the magnificent trees, with a cup of tea can be a very relaxing experience.

A short distance away, the road opposite the Taj entrance leads you to Erin Villa, a beautiful cottage sitting pretty amidst all the greenery. Its garden is probably one of the most well maintained you will ever see. The owner stocks exquisite lace items like table cloths, covers and bedspreads for sale, made by local women. Pick up something that catches your fancy.

Simm's Park is another must-visit site but do be prepared for the crowds. There are beautiful flower beds, rock gardens and lawns and many rare exotic trees.

How to get there
The nearest airport is at Coimbatore, 100 km away.
