'Indian Salsa has truly arrived'

August 19, 2008
His partner, Sneha, agreed. "When Lourd Vijay's Dance Studio opened here in Bangalore, there was literally no other place to go for Salsa. Now, there are no less than 16 to 20 dance studios dedicated to Salsa, in Bangalore alone! It's great to see so many people dancing, and dancing well. It's a reminder of how far we've come."

"At one point, I saw 27 couples dancing in unison!" exclaimed Tholoor. "It's difficult to coordinate three couples for a routine, but 27? That's so difficult. It shows me that Indian Salsa has truly arrived."

Kaytee Namgyal, founder of Mumbai's Salsa India Dance Company, has also watched the Indian dance scene's transformation. "The three Indian cities with a lot of Salsa -- Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai -- all have many, many ethusiastic and talented dancers. That wasn't true just five years ago," he said.
