Biking to Raigad Fort

In those days the entrance to the fort used to shut at five pm.

No one was allowed to enter or leave the fort after that.

Once Hirkani a milkmaid got delayed leaving the fort. When no amount of pleading helped she decided to risk her life and go down the cliff to get home to her baby who was left in the village below.

Airfare for Rs 100 and less!

When Shivaji heard the news next day, he summoned Hirkani to the palace and rewarded her with gifts and gold coins.

Hirkani showed Shivaji how she got down the steep cliff.

Immediately an order was passed to construct a steep stone wall to rectify this flaw.

We went to this spot and saw the wall named Hirkani Buruj and the cliff.

I salute the brave lady. Just looking down the cliff I felt giddy.

There is a small stone carving of Lord Hanuman on the wall. We paid our respects to him and to Hirkani as well.
