Of majestic dams and golden domes

After a while all the elephants clambered out of the water for food that was being readied for them.

They all lined up neatly against a wall. Balls of raagi and jaggery, the size of small cannon balls were fed to them.

Elephants eat about 250 kg of food daily. Ample evidence of that lay scattered all around in the form of dung.

After the feed all of us gathered around a forest ranger who proceeded to give us a talk on elephants. He spoke about their food habits, mating habits and their qualities.

He compared the Indian elephant to the African elephant. We learnt quite a bit that day about the biggest land animal.

Our next stop was the Harangi dam, about 36 km from Madikeri. The dam looked majestic, with the water gushing down its sluice gates.

We clicked a few photographs and headed to Kushalnagar, which houses a very famous Tibetan monastery.

The golden domes of the monastery were visible from the car as we sped towards it, passing through fields of golden corn. Inside the monastery, monks of all ages in red and gold outfits were engaged in everyday activities. Some were sitting talking, some merrily played football, while others were walking around in big groups.
