Use public transport
Acquaint yourself with the timing of trains, buses, metros and ferries wherever applicable and use these liberally instead of cabs and auto rickshaws. This seems like small saving but when added up it amounts to a huge sum.
Try to ensure that your hotel or guesthouse is in an area well connected by public transport.
A place close to the bus or train station is a must to avoid the additional cost of travelling from your hostel/hotel to the station/bus stop.
