If you are travelling by train, book in advance. You can also book an airline ticket from any of the no-frills airlines like
Air Deccan,
Air Deccan or Kingfisher Airlines, etc for less money. The earlier you book, the less the damages.
Many airlines also offer last minute bargain fares so wait for them and don't book the first flight available.
Indulge in online comparisons. If you can't find an inexpensive flight to your destination city, fly to a nearby city and then catch a low cost connecting flight to your destination. Connecting flights can work out cheaper as well.
