'The old Devdas's were melodramatic; Dev D is very real'

It's not everyday that a filmmaker writes a role keeping you in mind. And that is what Anurag Kashyap did when he spotted Mahi Gill dancing at a party.

Seeing her, the filmmaker immediatedly thought of Paro, and cast her in his contemporary take on Devdas called Dev D.

The Punjabi actress spoke to Patcy N about how she almost gave up her role, and about her co-stars Kalki Koechlin and Abhay Deol.

Tell us about yourself.

I am from Chandigarh, Punjab. I have done my Masters in Theatre from Punjab University. While I was studying, I was offered a Punjabi movie Mitti Wajaan Maardi. Following that, I came to Mumbai and worked on my second Punjabi film Chak De Phatte.

Did you face any objections from your family?

No. Actually, my mother was offered a movie role when she was young but her father didn't let her do it. So she could never fulfill her dreams. Today, she is a lecturer in a college. When I got acting offers, my mother told me to go ahead.
