Fiddler On The Roof (1971)
Set during pre-revolutionary Russia, this musical is based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem. It centres on the life of Tevye (Topol), a poor Jewish milkman who tries to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three daughters.
But times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. Meanwhile, Russia is on the brink of revolution and the Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye tries his best to keep everyone and everything together.
While dealing with serious subjects, the film also flirts with comedy and boasts of a superb score by Jerry Bock. Supporting cats members include Norma Crane as Golde, Tevye's wife, Rosalind Harris, Michele Marsh and Neva Small. The film won Oscars for original score and cinematography.
