The Democratic Progressive Alliance led by the DMK has shrunk in size after the Pattali Makkal Katchi deserted the DPA to join the AIADMK-led alliance.
The DPA now consists of the Congress, the Thirumalvalavan-led Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the Indian Union Muslim League and the Dravida Kazhagam.
While the Sri Lanka crisis was the main issue at the AIADMK rally, it surprisingly remained on the sidelines at the DMK event.
Few DPA leaders spoke about the Sri Lanka crisis, and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, a vocal supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, refrained altogether from speaking on the issue. The next day, he told NDTV's Sreenivasan Jain that LTTE leader V Prabhakaran was a friend of his, and not a terrorist, making national headlines.
