It is carnival time in Rae Bareli and Amethi.

The last time a mother-son duo from the dynasty won from Rae Bareli and Amethi was in 1980: Indira Gandhi and Sanjay. History may well be repeated 24 years later, and the people are excited.

They have a major peeve, too: that Priyanka is not in the fray. "She should have contested from Rae Bareli," says Surinder Yadav, a restaurant owner in Amethi. "If not from Uttar Pradesh, we want her to contest from anywhere in India."
