Natural-born politician Priyanka's speeches are direct. And she takes on the BJP with 'sari talk' that appeals to the women. "It was the most shameful incident. Poor women are getting killed for saris under BJP rule," she tells the crowd, referring to the stampede at the event organised by BJP leader Lalji Tandon in which 21 women and a child were killed. It is a disgrace, Priyanka reminds the crowds, that people are dying over saris in the prime minister's constituency.

"I am here to understand your problems. I am here to serve the people," she says.

Her criticism of the Vajpayee government has all the makings of a skillful politician.

The womenfolk agree with everything she says. "She is our daughter, whatever she says is true," says Fatima, who heads a local women's voluntary group.

Fatima says Priyanka has been visiting Rae Bareli often. "She is helping us out in our healthcare and literacy programmes. She is not like other politicians," she adds.
